How to meditate

Meditation is THE TOOL that allows me to keep sane!

When people ask me:

“Helene, how do you cope being alone with 2 kids far from your family?”

My answer is “I meditate!”

To be honest, since I understand how to meditate, I feel safe everywhere. I know that I can simply use that super powerful tool anytime I freak out!

I started practicing meditation a long time ago and I was a little confused. I was expecting “something” and did not know what this “something” was!

It is actually quite simple and over the years I learnt to explain it to people around me. It only requires your WILL to do it!

Do you feel more awakened when you start the day with or without a shower?

A lot of you would say “with”! It not only wakes us up, it is also hygienic and feels good to have a wash to start the day and getting rid of the toxins that came to the surface of the skin overnight.

Meditation is the same! Starting the day with it is hygienic too!

There is extensive scientific research on the benefits of meditation on the brain and here is one example:

When I read those findings, I did many meditation courses and as they said that the brain shape was starting changing within 5 to 8 weeks, I did practice daily for 8 weeks to see how this would affect me.

I am meditating ever since.

Before having kids, I was meditating daily for long period of time. 40 minutes was easy to find!

It took me a while to re-adjust with babies. It seemed like I did not have any time to spare. I now see the tremendous benefits of doing short meditations. I simply do it more often.

  • Let’s go to the cinema!

Meditating is like going to the cinema of our thoughts. I simply sit, or lay down and watch my thoughts.

I chose one point of focus such as my breathing and simply relax.

Every so often I catch myself acting instead of watching the movie of my thoughts. We, by nature, love thinking. When I catch myself acting, I go back to my spectator seat and I feel good because I am consciously letting that thought go: WINNER!

  • No Marathon on DAY 1 of the training!

Meditating is the fitness of our mind and we need to build it up slowly.

Start with 1 full minute. Timer ON: 1 minute morning and night and build it up!

It is not about how long you meditate for, but how often!

3- Mindfulness is a great place to start

Last week, in the video I posted on How do I keep my thoughts positive, I briefly talked about Mindfulness. Mindfulness is a form of meditation and I practice it throughout the day while being active.

Simply pick up a moment (or more) a day when you know at that particular time you are in the moment. And sit in your body, FEEL it from within. How does that chair feel? And those feet touching the floor?

And when that strong desire of acting comes back, just remember to go back to the spectator‘s seat!

I hope this video will help in reaching your goals.

Reward yourself for taking the time to connect with yourself.

Remember that everything starts from within and the shortcut to save the planet is to LOVE YOURSELF!
