I arrived in Australia end of 2005. It was warm, I was living in St Kilda, the iconic summer spot in Melbourne.
After a few months in the country, I had my birthday and decided to organize a party. I invited 20 people.
To my surprise: everyone was available and accepted the invitation. I prepared a buffet so we could chat, have some food and drinks but most importantly: dance!
Towards the end of the day, I started receiving a few texts from people apologizing they could not come, maybe 3.
That night, there were 10 people and I had food for 20!
I didn’t know the “no worries” culture and now, after 15 years here, I get it. I know it does not come from bad intent. It comes from the opposite. People don’t want to hurt others and prefer to “pretend” they’ll go rather than saying they won’t.
Some would even pretend they forgot.
Look: I love Australia and love Australians (I’m Australian too now).
Culturally that was a big shock for me. I have lived in Mexico where everyone turns up 4h later than the agreed arrival time and I’ve learned to be more flexible through that experience.
Even recently I was on a messenger exchange with someone and we were discussing a lunch around my birthday again and suddenly the communication stopped. No answer…
